Hemp has been identified as an up-and-coming crop with plenty of potential in the U.S. and Canada. Now, a recent study published in the Journal of Animal Science confirms there is potential for hemp as a source of livestock feed.

The study, conducted by a group of professors and researchers from North Dakota State University, evaluated the effects of dietary inclusion of hempseed cake in comparison with dried corn distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) on growth performance, feeding behaviour, carcass characteristics and blood parameters in finishing heifers.

The data from the study suggests that hempseed cake has a lower net energy for maintenance and gain relative to DDGS when adequate metabolizable protein is supplied, while still providing adequate nutrition to support the acceptable performance of finishing cattle.
